It would be easy to confidently assert that information is misinformation before completing an investigation as long as it pertains to the university’s actions in response to the crime as opposed to the crime itself.

Where the administration faltered was in providing so little information. This was a failure in its dealing with the media, allowing all sorts of nasty rumors to fester (some possibly true).
