I was confused as to what made this case different but from what I’ve gathered it seems that as opposed to the “wink, wink” donations to the schools that people make all the time, this was a case of “donations” to a fake charity (which they then tried to claim on their taxes) which makes it straight up fraud.

I feel like in this case doing it on purpose would also be significantly worse?  Like misspeaking is mildly embarrassing... but intentionally deciding “I can’t be bothered to take the time to call you by the correct name” would be an incredibly disrespectful thing to do.

Oxford dictionary says using the apostrophe to pluralize single letters and numbers is acceptable. Also this tweet from the AP Stylebook says you should use an apostrophe and the NY Times does it as well.
