Graduate school. Funding can disappear due to grants ending or professors simply deciding they don’t want to pay your stipend anymore. Unless you want to walk away from several years of work and not get your PhD you have to work for no money. I had to spend a year doing this. Not fun and a pretty exploitative practice.
