When police feel justified in using deadly force it's often said that they "feared for their lives". My understanding of good police training means that in stressful, dangerous situations THEY are the ones with the cool heads and retain the ability to think clearly.

It *should* be a non story because people really shouldn't care if a player is gay. But it's still news. Eventually when more of these guys come out and nothing ends up happening these will be non stories. This is part of that process.

You can probably count on your hands the number of "out" male athletes in major team sports. This story does not sensationalize or "tabloidize" Sarafin's gayness. But you can't pretend it's not notable just because you want it to not be notable now rather than 5 years from now. It is notable.
