Supposedly GRRM has told HBO the ultimate endgame for the series, and he’s said several times that the show will end the same way as the book series. Even if he never finishes the books the show at least will have something close to the intended canon ending.

For what it’s worth, the show was based on a British show called Criminal Justice and pretty much followed the plot to a T, including the female lawyer getting involved with the defendant. Just saying it wasn’t HBO writers who had that dumb idea first.
