Short answer: Speed dependent whining noise while driving - sounded like scalloped tires and the winters on it did show signs of abnormal wear. Turns out, after buying the car, it was actually coming from the front differential (which is housed within the transmission) ....on an Audi....

Did that car just do an entire 1/4 mile on one head gasket??

With an non-studded track, the only things that concrete/pavement will affect are the carbide runners on the skis and cooling/lubrication of the track sliders.
