Did you watch her E! show? Because I feel like when she started meeting with trans groups and trans leaders, they were looking at her like she was some trans messiah they had all been waiting on. Like “FINALLY! The embodiment of sporty manliness has come out as trans. This will really help get positive exposure for

Well, not all of her children. Apparently, some family members, including her daughter Deborah, are supportive of the project and worked as consultants on it. Others, including her oldest son, have the attitude you described. So there seems to be a rift in the family about this. Which is sad.

Just another case of a subject matter best relayed through a documentary format where the subject and perspective can be thoughtfully, factually, and respectfully portrayed. I enjoyed the book, especially because I was ignorant of the existence of Henrietta Lacks. I had my doubts abut this HBO film. So thanks for the

Honestly as a trans woman myself, one of the most frustrating parts of Caitlyn’s transition has been watching cis feminists line up and talk about Caitlyn in generalizations and stereotypes that are either ignorant of or deliberately trying to overlook the Ivanka Trumps of the world. This idea that somehow Caitlyn’s

I mean the book threaded a pretty fine line with the author becoming part of the story, which was an enormously difficult feat that I’m still not sure was 100% pulled off. Translating that into a 90 minute movie gives you... well, this.

“But I kept wishing that, unlike the book, the entire film was told from Lacks’s perspective and set mostly in the ’40s and ’50s.”

A better term would be to say they are socialized as transwomen. From what I’ve gathered (and what is parallel to my experience as a trans man), the socialization and its effects is distinctly different than a men’s because of several factors including behaviour in childhood and the fact that children of all genders

Recognizing Caitlyn Jenner’s role in gaining more widespread visibility for trans issues is really not the same thing as judging her to be a good person. It takes an especially small-minded person to think that people who (for example) defending Jenner’s right to be called by her proper pronouns are defending her

That’s like how I begrudgingly admire Megyn Kelly for standing her ground, but then I think “.... wait a minute, she doesn’t give a shit about anyone other than Megyn Kelly. Fuck her.”

I think it’s worth noting that most transwomen spend a whole lot of time of their formative years being socialized as men. I’ve read from several transmen about how being socialized as a woman effected their transition, and I’d be interested in seeing how that socialization effects transwomen as well. Caitlyn being

She should be shown respect, and she should not be misgendered, and it does indeed take courage to come out (especially as a public figure). Those things are still true. She can both be criticized for her bigoted/ignorant views and also be given basic human respect—those things are not mutually exclusive.

Caitlyn is a fascinating look into what white male privilege looks like on a woman. White women have their own sense of privilege but this Caitlyn mess is a whole different beast. She’s got like, super-duper privilege and watching her open her gob and consistently embarrass herself is one of my last remaining

The way I see it, if anyone is coming for her for anything related to her gender, sexuality, or transition I’m down to defend. Literally anything else? Caitlyn, you’re on your own.

I’m still not sure she even cares about transgender issues really. Unless they affect her. And then she cares. But really isn’t that how most Republicans operate anyway?

“He wanted me to come play golf with him. At that time, I thought it was a pretty good idea, but since Title IX — it’s not a good idea and so I won’t be playing golf with him.”

You can transition the girl out the privileged American White Male ™, but never transition the privileged American White Male™ out of the girl.
