I initially assumed it was a miniseries. When I heard it was just a movie, I decided I didn’t really need to see it. The book was so powerful, I just couldn’t imagine that it could be condensed well into a simple movie. I’m glad to hear I made the right decision.

I feel like this is a more universally human thing rather than just internalized misogyny (though that’s definitely there). It seems like something people do to reassure themselves that bad things won’t happen to them. Don’t want to get violently dragged off an airplane? According to a number of my Facebook

It’s also sometimes easier to believe that things like rape only happen to bad people as a kind of subconscious defense mechanism. If rape only happens to girls who were “asking for it”, then it can’t happen to me, because obviously I’m not asking for it. And if she was “asking for it”, then it wasn’t actually rape,

I was told, “Well, the beauty of our system is that in four years, if people don’t like him, he’ll get voted out.” And when I pointed out that in four years an awful lot of people could have their lives permanently derailed, it was greeted with a shrug.

I hope that at the wedding, she gets seated with the cousins. Not even the cousins. The second-cousins. (I come from WASPs, can you tell?)

When I was pregnant, my MIL would ask me every week how much weight I had gained, and then she’d tell me all about how when she was pregnant, she only gained five pounds per pregnancy (she was not overweight—she says that the heaviest she’s ever been is 120 pounds and I believe her). After a month or so, I just

This picture is all I’ve got. Holy hell!

Sorry, Tomi. You’re on your own.

I my head, I like to imagine that Donald and Melania are laughing because they know how ridiculous the idea that he’s done more than Obama is

Do we know that she was cheating? Because the other possibility is that she was just feeling a little down and needed a pick-me-up. You know, some extra attention and people feeling sorry for her. I don’t think it’s a particularly common thing, but I went to high school with someone like that. The first time she

Also libraries, since the budget zeroes out federal library funding. Because fuck reading, amirite? (And fuck enriching programs for children, technology classes for the community, internet access for those who can’t afford it, etc)

I sew a lot of my own clothes and I will say that there are A LOT of these cold shoulder patterns out there at the major pattern companies. It must be a thing that 40+ women like. I always look at those patterns and think, “Well, that would be a decent shirt except that it doesn’t have any shoulders. Why doesn’t it

I feel like two marketing people over drinks one night got talking about how fucking dumb the customers are and how if you just put some fucking fabric on a model and say it’s cool people will buy it. Then one bet the other that they couldn’t sell a tank top that was clearly not actually a tank top and the other

I thought the same thing. She’s a year older than me and she’s a grandmother? I...don’t really know what to do with that.

I’d say it was very Freudian, but it’s not subtle enough.

I’m pretty sure he thinks leaving his jacket open hides his gut.

Well, that’s kinda the cherry on top of this. The sentences are long because they were convicted under Georgia’s anti-gang laws, laws that were intended to be used against black people (notably, Georgia doesn’t have hate crime laws). It’s really kind of beautiful, when you step back and look at it.

I loved that movie for giving us vampires as kind of low life drifters, rather than European sophisticates. It’s such a welcome breath of fresh air.

He kind of reminds me of a guy I did some work for a while ago where I thought, Dude, you know that Patrick Bateman wasn’t supposed to be aspirational, right? I was not in the least bit surprised when I read a couple of years later that the dude was under indictment for fraud and tax evasion.
