I'd go one step further and say vacuum seal.

Not drastic, but I keep the door to the spare bedroom closed. There's no heat/AC vent in that room, so that's less energy to maintain the temperature in the rest of the house, and it keeps the cats out, so I don't have to vacuum in there.

What you call overkill, I call bonus features! But seriously, Slingbox works great for controlling the tv from a computer or phone. When my Comcast remote died I used my cellphone and slingbox app until I could get to the local Comcast office to pick up another one.
