iMac 2006? That has a 32-bit EFI, which can’t go past Snow Leopard. So I really wouldn’t say that is a good example since Apple routinely leaves behind Macs with enough power to run the latest OSX editions, for reasons they can’t explain. My 2010 iMac can’t run Sierra, but it runs El Capitan perfectly fine.
