1-Up are still a great gameplay mechanic depending on the game. Lives in Spelunker HD can go quickly but can be built back up if you're careful. When playing in co-op mode, the lives are pooled which is a cool dynamic.

But…. Under Siege 2 has it all:
1) Eric Bogosian saying "As you can see, we're on a choo-choo",
2) Ryback hacking with an Apple Newton,
3) Red Forman watching his crew control a satellite to become peeping Toms via space,

I didn't have a problem with saving and returning, but I think I was only playing The Room at the time & nothing else.

Without trying to spoil anything, 3 should be played after 2. I'm not sure how PC versions or the HD remake handle this.

I think the blank-slate protagonist Henry of 4 works as it makes the Silent Hill phenomenon reach outside their city limits and could affect anyone. Also, wasn't it more than just location, location, location? I thought Henry had visited (normal) Silent Hill previous to the game and taken photographs that led to him…

I also enjoyed The Room, Homecoming, and Downpour, maybe because I went in without having read any reviews. Homecoming has 3 flaws that I want to highlight:

A prime example: Conan's intro skit for his premiere episode of "Late Nite with Conan O'Brien" goes close to 11. What a way to introduce yourself…

I always though Vanilla Secret 2 is where to get lots of lives quickly: get to the checkpoint, take the P switch to the left a bit, then stomp & keep heading left for lots of lives.
