AWD/4WD cars/trucks you need to keep chains with you if you don’t have winters on. If you have winters and AWD/4WD they’ll let you go on without chains.

I thought chains were required, at least to be with you if needed, even with a 4x4. Was I mistaken? Technically I’m not supposed to put chains on my Rubicon per the owners manual, so I always wondered about that.

Totally need AWD (or 4WD) if you ski in California. For those who do not know, studded tires are illegal in CA and if you go to the mountains during the winter they either require AWD/4WD or chains. They literally have checkpoints set up by the highway patrol.

My VW Phaeton V8 is kinda “normal.” Although its reliability and driveability are mainstream, the maintenance costs are more towards “exotic.” My other two cars are not at all normal: a 1967 Imperial Coupe and a 2004 SL55 AMG.
