Hot take about a style for beer thats been around since 1553.
Its delicious.
consider yourself lucky.
so true
This is true, but in to my taste, a oldish german lager in a brown bottle, is, with few exceptions (Trumer, Ninkasi Lux) still better than a fresh American version. The US ones just cant get that bready taste that I love.
Meh, I’d take Nooner (their “german” pils) over any US lager available on the west coast, save Trumer. If Will redid his Spring Beer ranking, it would destroy nasty Scrimshaw. (I’d still take any respectable kraut helles or pils served in a brown bottle or keg over nooner, however.)
I would kill to have Augustiner import their full line up. I love edelstoff, but not at 17 a six pack. I think Spaten hate is overkill and a reaction against being purchased by InBev. Their helles is just fine (if purchased in a light shielding cardboard 12 pack;) and their octoberfest is very far from the worst out…
Ayinger is my favorite this year. A perfect cross between the darker ones (Spaten and most American versions) and the paler ones (Hofbrau, etc...).
If you dont like lager, that’s one thing, but Nooner and Summer Lager are at or near the top of the American craft lager pile.
No Ayinger? Spaten dead last (behindSam Adams??) No bavarians in the top 5? You’re dead to me, Will Gordon. SN is a good spin on the style, but the “just add hops to it” style doesn’t make it better than the old world examples.
