For real. Some of our ADD and ADHD kids go unmedicated-either due to the expense of the medication or the parents taking them instead of the kids. Our special ed parapro will call or text the parents of those kids and ask to give them a can of soda because it helps them focus.

Absolutely. I'm a special ed teacher and last year one of my kids with the most severe ADHD I've ever seen had to go off his meds due to side effects. The first few days were like a Mack truck hit the campus, but then he started bringing Rockstars from home and asked if he could drink one in the morning and one at

There's probably way more sugar in a cup of orange juice than there is in 3 tbsp of soda. Granted, orange juice does have some vitamins, but if you're worried about a sugar crash, cinnamon toast and OJ is going to be just as bad.

We got candy in school before the state tests in the 90s. I also looks forward to test day

I was saying up thread that it doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. Poor kid.

You know what? People with ADD do need those medications to function normally. Neurotypical people do not. And BS like this (yes, I know you're being sarcastic but it chaps my butt anyway) makes it that much harder for us to get our properly prescribed meds - which involves monthly doctor visits and taking a written

Yup. Adults with undiagnosed ADD will unconsciously self medicate with caffeine. Works in a pinch for me. Not as well or controlled as the meds but sure as hell better than nothing.

It's 3 tablespoons. They're not going to get addicted to caffeine off of that.

Caffeine has been proven to help with ADD symptoms in children. All the ADD meds are stimulants so while they are different than coffee they do all come from the same category.

Uh, Juicy Juice is 100% JUICE. That's why my lame dad always bought me juice boxes instead of super cool squeezable Capri Sun.

3 tbsp of mountain dew, if my math is right, contains 6.75 milligrams of caffeine, and 5.8125 grams of total sugar.

Otis Sudeikis? I always feel for these kids who run the risk of developing a lisp and not being able to pronounce their own name. That is, if that's the kid's last name.

Your thesis adviser cares!! ;)

People, It's 3 tablespoons of Mountain Dew, that 44 mL of the drink (1 g of sugar and 5 mg of Caffeine), that's going to get you to wake up if you weigh 10 kilos. Surely there are more important things to worry about? Like gearing our entire educational system towards test-taking?

I'm not so sure that less than 1/4 of a can of mountain dew, a couple days out of the year, is enough to get someone addicted to caffeine.

Caffeine can have different effects on children that you would expect. In small doses it can cause kids to have MORE focus, rather than less. My son's kindergarten special educator suggested giving him a half-cup of unsweetened coffee mixed with milk as a morning drink to help with focus. She had one student whose

Kate Dries, may I call you Kate? Kate, my friend please I implore you to start following better celebrity tweeters.
