I read another quote from Silverstone elsewhere where she basically says that eating "clean" and "chemical-free" is sufficient to allow your body to defend itself against diseases and that her child has never been sick because he eats a plant-based diet. Like...what kind of diet do you think people have been eating

I am right there with you. Currently, I have a job for an important person. My degree (bach. in psych) opened doors for me but not in the field. It's not like I was too heartbroken though. I mean, I was heartbroken to see how much the human services field is screwed up and it hurts more than it helps for many people.

I just commented about the words "yum" and "yummy" as well. The reasons why I hate them are 1) the sound of the word itself is disgusting, 2) it's lazy. Actually describe how that stupid meal you photographed and uploaded to Facebook tastes, don't declare its superb quality with an idiotic "Yum!!!1!" and 3) the word

Also relevant:

DO NOT open a restaurant or bakery with little to no experience. Just watch the myriad of reality shows dedicated to bailing people out of this initially attractive but unrealistic prospect (Kitchen Nightmares, etc). Enjoying cooking/baking and working in cooking/baking are two entirely different things. Take it from

I second that. If you've never worked in a restaurant before, definitely do that before you open one of your own. Food service is a shit ton of work. It can be fun and rewarding (and also suck), but it's not for everyone. If you have worked in a restaurant before, you know.

Yep. I really really dislike the adult use of the word "yummy." I don't know why, but it really irks me.

I actually think the "dream job" bullshit is bad for young people. It makes people feel badly about their careers when they get "just a job" and then feel like they're somehow insubstantial in their work because it's not giving them an emotional orgasm every day.

Well, cloth diapers are far less wasteful and don't end up with poop trails in your house.

I don't know if it's a generational thing. I'm in my early 20's, and I don't know a single person who thinks this way aside from a few "artist" types who only want to support themselves with their creative work. I think it's more that American work culture has become so overwhelming for nearly all fields (answer work

Does Hallmark make a card that says "Have fun watching your child die of whooping cough!" ? If so, do they sell it outside of California and Oregon yet?

I'm all for folks raising their children in the way they see fit (excluding neglect & the bad stuff, obvs.) But I have no shame in admitting I'm FULL-ON JUDGING the baby birding technique. What in the everloving fuck of all the fucks.

This is no surprise to anyone who has had the misfortune of reading her other book, The Kind Diet. All she talks about in there is how drinking milk will give you osteoporosis and how eating fruits that grow in a climate different than yours makes you sick. And the best thing you can ever eat is sea vegetables, which

On the flip side, I know a lot of people who went to law school because their current "career" sucked. They're not happier being a lawyer, the money is only marginally better, and most of them are in debt.

Just a tip. There is a hell of a difference between having an interest in cooking/baking and actually running a restaurant/bakery. Explore all your options and go into it with your eyes wide open.

I don't know what this Shellenbarger is talking about. Most young'uns (and old'uns) I know would consider any job that pays their rent, utilities, groceries and offers health insurance a "Dream Job".

I just want to have a job that pays the bills and that I don't totally despise and dread.

Yup. I'm trying for a job that doesn't make me physically ill at the thought of going there and doesn't tell people they really ought to be moving on after two years because there's literally no way to move up. I still have to find a better thing to say in job interviews because that doesn't seem like it'd go over

I think it's less that "dream jobs" don't exist, and more that we seem to think a dream job means that you're ALWAYS happy, fulfilled and love every moment while you're on the job. It just doesn't work that way. You can have a job you love, but you will still have moments when things are shitty.

Umm. Roku? Doesn't seem that difficult.
