Right??
Right??
I grew up in a tiny white town in a tiny white county that went deep red this election cycle, and sadly, the staunch conservatives there won’t be swayed by patience and facts. I think what’s going to help the most is supporting more POC in the media, re-instating the Voting Rights Act, ending redlining, fighting…
THIS. I also think it’s really important to consider who we’re being loving TOWARDS. If I’m in a quiet space having a conversation with someone, I’ll probably talk with them about why their bigotry is so damaging (if I’m feeling patient enough), but if someone approaches me and tries to justify their bigotry to me in…
Germany, ironically... *Merkel remains our last bastion of hope.
Pacific Standard Time =D
I feel like you’ve reversed your “best” and “worst” case scenarios.
Yup. I think a lot of white women are both racist (and therefore pro-Trump/alt-right) AND deeply sexist (thus, anti-Clinton). It’s suuuuper depressing. I’ve had a nasty cold for the past 2 weeks because my immune system basically peaced the fuck out after the election.
THIS. It sure as hell wasn’t the progressive democrats who dismantled the (very pro-democracy) Voting Rights Act.
Yup, I agree, it probably won’t change the outcome (we can cross our fingers, though, right??), but I think this quote from Halderman’s article is meaningful:
Here’s the post by J. Alex Halderman (Computer Science Prof at U. Michigan, and a member of the group petitioning for the recounts): https://medium.com/@jhalderm/want-to-know-if-the-election-was-hacked-look-at-the-ballots-c61a6113b0ba#.jrbfk79uv
<3 Just trying to do my part!! ;)
Right there with you. <3 I’m skipping Thanksgiving this year because I don’t trust myself to not tell each and every one of my Trump-supporting asshole relatives exactly what I think of them in painstaking detail. I’ve been taking my rage out on my friends’ uber-conservative “friends” on FB (I’m talking religious…
Aaaaand there’s the fact that many military voters went Gary Johnson (so not staunch Trump supporters), plus their enthusiasm for Trump seems tepid at best: http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/what-impact-will-the-military-vote-have/
This stuff is why I donate to The Guardian and similar. Foreign news outlets did a MUCH better job than American news sources of rightly skewering the orange hatemonger during the campaign.
Wah wah. You can’t blame others for your own stupid comments.
Ummmm, I don’t need to know anything about you to read your comment and think it’s crap.
I think your key phrase was, “I don’t work in science.” Buskerdoo literally wrote, “Fish kills like this seem to disturb people but its not that uncommon and happens in usually more boring ways,” which was highly misleading, and equated the incident described (which was human-caused) with totally normal occurrences…
You are literally not even trying to get it. Your post was highly misleading, and if that’s how you interact with the public, then for the sake of all scientists who want the public to actually take these issues seriously, STOP.
