Generally with modern cars it’s more to protect the gigantic rims manufacturers and consumers seem to prefer (though you still have to get big enough rims to fit around the brakes). Though a smaller traction patch is still a good idea.

To be fair even at -13 you can turn boiling water into snow by throwing it in the air. I posted a few videos to youtube back in the day of doing just that.
