The grade affects the price of the card, even thought it’s 1/1. If some had crumpled it out of the box and it was a 4, for example, that definitely would have changed the price. On the flipside if it had been graded a 10 it probably would have doubled the eventual price of the card, at least.

I’m only moderately familiar with comic book grading, but 9.8 could be a good comparison. 9 is a mint card, but it’s the grade they give you when they want to say your card is mint but not super-duper mint. And/or you’re not a good enough customer of theirs to give you a 10 (the real reason), and/or they’re scared of…
