This is not just comfortable white people, though. This is America’s “meritocracy”, or rather the flip side of it. The attitude that built America’s success said that if you work hard enough, then you can find wealth and happiness. That also implies that if you don’t find wealth and happiness, then it’s your own fault

I think a lot of it is panic amongst the upper middle class whites who shelled out truly absurd amounts for their kids’ higher (and lower) educations, plus the backbreaking, criminal student loan racket, in order to “ensure” that their kid would get a nice, safe, six figure job. What that job was almost didn’t matter

With all acknowledgement that comedy is subjective, anyone who can read the “100 Yard Mosey” Far Side and not find it funny should have their chuckle card revoked.

Ah, to be upper-middle class white.

He surfaces occasionally - there’s a mention of him posting something new on his Facebook, he did a surprise guest artist appearance in a strip called “Pearls Before Swine” a few years back, stuff like that.

Sad but true.

It’s not just that they are gaslighting us, it’s that there are also large numbers of people who believe them!

What we REALLY need is new stuff from hermit Bill Watterson.

You see this also in the attitudes of so many middle aged-to-older people in things like how they view minimum wage jobs. “Well I worked for $2 an hour and it was more than enough, these people are just lazy/greedy/etc” - ignoring the fact that inflation has made that completely irrelevant. $2 from ‘back in the day’

Don’t forget the follow-up with cats:

Yes, there are old people working at my grocery stores too, as well as in other low paid occupations. Many people are also working from home, which may skew towards young professionals.

Not really seeing why any Jalopnik readers would/should be upset by this - the guy was pretty clearly violating any number of traffic laws just to get there in the first place, and at least from what it says here, I don’t see how anyone* could think it was anything but 110% deliberate.

Man, if you don’t find this funny, I don’t want to know what you do find funny:

That’s definitely a “throwing out baby-boomer with the bathwater” situation, but to be fair Boomers have lost the benefit of the doubt.

Saw a sad thread on a meme site of users complaining that Larson isn’t funny and is ‘boomer humor’. Made me really angry that a community whose sense of humor is defined by irony and morbidity wouldn’t understand the magic of Larson.

Shout. it. from. the. fucking. rooftops.

In the wake of this “second wave” (really, first wave part two) there’s been this narrative that “young people” are getting infected at higher rates because they’ve decided to go out partying to the bars that are open to them or they’re hosting parties at their own homes. Therefore, young people, you better behave and

I felt a great disturbance in the collective GM site readership, as if millions of crypto-fascist Jalopnik readers suddenly cried out in terror, and were silenced.

I live in the South, I’m screaming inside my fucking heart every day.

All I can tell you is that when good, intelligent, creative, ambitious, young people choose careers, they don’t become police officers.
