I really sort of expected one of these characters to be a young version of Max Von Sydow's Lor San Tekka.
I really enjoyed TFA but starting it all off with a much-loved veteran thespian who was new to the franchise talking and behaving like an old fan favourite character was weird.

I couldn't agree more. The last ever episode exemplifies that really well … was it messy? Absolutely. But friggin' beautifully so.
I'll always take a show that has so many fascinating ideas it's physically impossible to integrate all of them cohesively over one that doesn't have any at all.
