I noticed that there was a poster for Opekta on the wall behind Nixon when he goes to the post office looking to get whiskey. The Dutch branch of that company was originally managed by Anne Frank's father, and the building containing their offices and warehouse is where the family hid and she wrote most of her diary.

Thanks a lot for that — it happens to be one of the few of his books I haven't read yet.

You wouldn't happen to remember where you heard the Bryson comment, would you? Anne Frank actually died sometime in March of 1945, but the exact date is unknown. I love his books and have also read everything I can get my hands on about her life, so I'd be interested to read what he said about it.

I didn't see his comment about Earl's daughters that way at all. I thought he was saying that even though the family accepts him as one of their own, he knows that he would be expected to remarry more closely to their station and that no other aristocratic families would accept him the way the Crawleys have.
