On a side note, I got greyed after making this comment yesterday.
I felt like I was the only kid in high school who recognized Ayn Rand’s philosophy was revoltingly nihilistic elitism and that didn’t get me anywhere either.
How is it not incompetent to think an unfamiliar plant is edible? It’s the very definition of incompetent.
Pretty sure that eating plants that you’re unfamiliar with is a big no-no. I think eating mystery plants would easily fall under ego and incompetence.
Yeah. Some people said he was a good outdoorsman who hunted and fished enough to feed himself and would have made it back if there weren’t a mistake in the edible-botany book he was using and unusual flooding that year.
I felt like I was the only kid in my high school who saw him as an irresponsible idiot instead of a hero.
I’ve maintained this since reading the book in high school: Christopher McCandless was a stupid, naive, unprepared dink who thought he could piss in Nature’s face and get away with it. He got lucky a few times, but sooner or later if you don't respect Nature it will kill you dead.
Jia, your writing is brilliant. I always look forward to a new piece from you. Curious about what you think. You spent time writing stories of hardship for children of privilege, to make them seem more appealing to college admissions. Did any of your stories include familiar narratives of poverty, street violence,…
Last fall, I was hiring a student lab assistant for the lab I work in. I had it down to two candidates, one black guy, one white. I mentioned to my co-worker that the black guy was a Posse Foundation scholar, and I was thinking that would probably be the final mark in his favor (it’s NOT an easy program to get…
My boss paid somebody $200 per essay to review her son’s and edit them and provide suggestions for him based on his life experience. The concept is strange to me. I was skeptical, but her son did do the actual writing on each draft so at least it wasn’t dishonest in that sense. I find it odd Jia regarded it as the…
Only a Becky would leave a comment like this.
Yes, the Official Online Slang Dictionary and Quora are where the real definitions of slang created by Black people can be found. How can I possibly argue with that? You...you win. I will hang my head in shame now that I have been properly educated about the real meanings of slang terms created by, well, my own…
Lol, no.
That was weird for me, too.
This reminds me of perhaps the most evil interview process I had to endure, which ironically enough, was for a scholarship to a private, Catholic college. The interviews were done in groups, no doubt, to ensure the interpersonal rivalry and scholastic feeding frenzy was at its highest level.
I’m guessing he probably resented that she was making more than he was.
Lol, really? Please explain how.
No reason to be more ashamed of a tutoring gig than any other type of employment (regardless of what the result was; like, seriously, should Apple store employees be ashamed of working for Apple because they’re implicitly supporting the horrible treatment of factory workers overseas?). Your boyfriend sounds like a…
Fantastic and thoughtful piece, Jia! I was also a cheerleader! Pics please ;P
This line is too crazy...
