So the AP should have held off its reporting on a major story so NJ and Cali could feel good about themselves?
You can absolutely say, âthis is an offensive and bullshit way of depicting a character whoâs in a minority that you arenât inâ. Otherwise we wouldnât be able to talk about literally anything. Thatâs the complaint with this book. Itâs some non disabled author using a disabled personâs suicide as a way to make herâŚ
This!
I mean, there's a commenter rn trying to tell me that I'm being condescending by suggesting that the OP might not be up to date on this subject. The feelings of privileged people always override everything else for some people.
I said âI donât think anyone uses âdifferently abledââ which is not the same as âno one uses this termâ. Let the other commented be mad if she wants, but donât misquote strangers to get mad on another strangerâs behalf. Poor form.
I understand that it used to be somewhat popular, but the term is nearly out of use today. Iâve even seen a lot of good work done on why âdifferently abledâ is out. One quick example: http://www.autistichoya.com/2013/08/differâŚ
They seem to have more empathy for a fictional character than for real disabled people though. Such is life.
I wish I could say I was surprised by the number of commenters putting ânon-disabled personâs imaginationâ over âwhatever actual disabled people have to sayâ.
You have good instincts!
The thing is that the character isnât a real person. He doesnât have agency because he doesnât exist. He was made up by a non-disabled person.
