😂

So the AP should have held off its reporting on a major story so NJ and Cali could feel good about themselves?

You can absolutely say, “this is an offensive and bullshit way of depicting a character who’s in a minority that you aren’t in”. Otherwise we wouldn’t be able to talk about literally anything. That’s the complaint with this book. It’s some non disabled author using a disabled person’s suicide as a way to make her…

This!

I mean, there's a commenter rn trying to tell me that I'm being condescending by suggesting that the OP might not be up to date on this subject. The feelings of privileged people always override everything else for some people.

I said “I don’t think anyone uses ‘differently abled’” which is not the same as “no one uses this term”. Let the other commented be mad if she wants, but don’t misquote strangers to get mad on another stranger’s behalf. Poor form.

I understand that it used to be somewhat popular, but the term is nearly out of use today. I’ve even seen a lot of good work done on why ‘differently abled’ is out. One quick example: http://www.autistichoya.com/2013/08/differ…

They seem to have more empathy for a fictional character than for real disabled people though. Such is life.

I wish I could say I was surprised by the number of commenters putting ‘non-disabled person’s imagination’ over ‘whatever actual disabled people have to say’.

You have good instincts!

The thing is that the character isn’t a real person. He doesn’t have agency because he doesn’t exist. He was made up by a non-disabled person.
