I would also like normal “short” sleeves back. Everything is either off/cold shoulder as listed above or entirely sleeveless.

Nah, I would say at least another 20 people need to tell me something I already know. :) I didn’t mind the first few because I clearly didn’t reference the history in my post, but I admit to being a little annoyed by the 25th and 30th response.
I had heard of it, and if I hadn’t the 30 people who responded with her name would have definitely informed me. :) I just didn’t drop her name in the original post as I didn’t really think it relevant. Plus, I am pretty sure my teacher’s version was vastly diferent (in a negative way) from what Jane Elliott did.
A bit overboard is a great way to describe that particular teacher.
No, my teacher poorly replicated her original exercise more than 20 years later.
I think they way she choose to act it out had the worst impact because for one group of kids it just became about getting treats and for another we just had a sucky day. The overall message got completely lost.
I imagine that is where she got it from and then just decided to half-ass it or something. I also mentioned in another comment that maybe she planned to do more and didn’t once parents started getting upset. My mother didn’t handle leaving me at school all the well and the principal definitely didn’t like 6 4th…
Yeah, I am aware of the experiment she was attempting to replicate. There is some debate on how effective even that one was, but I would think the way she did it was the worst possible version.
I have said it in a few responses already, but she did a pretty bad job at replicating the original experiment so it would be interesting to see what the results would have been if she had done a better job.
I have fabulous respect for teachers and it is an insanely difficult job. This woman was just an idiot. :)
That she was/is. It would have been interesting to see what the result would have been if she had done it the way the original experiment had. That being said, I believe she may have planned to put the other group through the same experience the next day and was scared off from doing so by my mother screaming at…
Yeah, I am aware of the original experiment that my teacher failed so miserably in reproducing. She was just a pretty terrible teacher in general.
Studies have actually shown some mixed results on whether or not her experiment was effective in positively altering attitudes or not, but my teacher didn’t really follow the original experiment -- she only did it one day, never gave both sets of kids the other side of the experience, and didn’t require any essay or…
Yes, years later I discovered all that. She definitely didn’t do it “right” and even if it had been done correctly, there is clearly a great deal of debate on the experiment’s effectiveness and its effect on the children who participate. I didn’t see it have much impact in the long run on the attitudes of the kids…
Back then most of my learnin’ came from books*, but this teacher was one of those who always liked to do things different. She had a lot of male “special friends” who would bring in show and tell type things for lessons — i.e. a pathologist who brought in various organs and she made us touch (with gloves) a diseased…
My 4th grade teacher did something similar to this for Martin Luther King Day. Divided us based on eye color and then gave the blue eyed kids special treats and spoke terribly to the rest of us, made us sit in the back of the room, etc. Even kept us late so that my mother left me at school thinking I had gotten…
“She says it is this big, but don’t believe the fake news, it’s yuge.”
It has been many years and I am rusty from disuse with many of this, but basically I think it was a co-opted psychology concept that my professor and some other acadmemics used to discuss the importance of making environmental education curriculum that doesn’t distance the learner from the issues so that they feel…
The “arts” saved my life. I literally would not be here today if it weren’t for the Theater and the role it played in my life. I can’t say for sure if the outreach program that found me depressed and alone in Middle School was funded through the NEA, but it is certainly similar to many that are. This isn’t cutting…
Yeah, in my studies of environmental education we always talked about the “locus of control” and making sure people understand that they have the power to make change. Too broad and you loose people.
