When something is that ingrained within your upbringing it is very, very difficult to escape. If “just leaving” was that easy, no one would stay with abusive spouses or remain in contact with abusive parents.

I am so torn about this. To avoid speaking ill, there were two huge topics to avoid: her abysmal response to the HIV epidemic and her role in the failed war on drugs (there are probably others but those two come to mind).
