Apple is a luxury tech company like Mercedes and BMW. Sure there are more economical options to do the same thing, but it's about the name, relative ease, and smoothness that separate it from the others.

To some people $500 is not much for a tablet. It's all relative and I'm sure the bulk of people that have iPads are not struggling to pay for it.
