Yeah, they intentionally set him up as the villain, this was supposed to establish that firmly. I have trouble believing people are really defending that character. Not that they need defending or otherwise, they're fictional.

I'm wondering how they're going to force an entry into that town what with the fences. You'd think they'd want to lay up and watch the defenders some before they launch their raid (though I guess time is of the essence if they think Glenn and Maggie are being hurt in there)
