Yes it was. Aside from mechanical issues and build quality, which stemmed from being rushed into production. If the car had time to be sorted out, it would have been great. Ford wanted them in dealerships to quickly.

There is not official meaning except for they are different concepts. Its called a V-6 or V-8 due to its design. An AWD system in Porsche 911 is a completely different animal than the 4WD in a Land Rover. They deserve distinction. AWD is an adopted term to differentiate the two.

They go hand in hand. Construction and ability. A platform designed for offroad will always out perform a platform adapted for offroad. Also, modern SUVs are made without 4wd in mind. The new Ford Explorer, Nissan Pathfinder, Chevy Trailblazer, etc.
