An AR-15 is a defensive weapon if you are defending yourself against a threat and you don’t have anything else. But I do agree that a shotgun will be more effective at hitting a target without relying on that pesky ‘aiming’ part.

I’d take a handgun for most excursions like this. Who wants to be picking mushrooms with a rifle on their back? Besides, a 9mm or .40 will easily dispatch a wolf. You’d only need an AR for defense against larger animals, like grizzly bears.

I would fill the crack with aluminum, plus add an additional plate of 1/4" steel over the crack for extra piece of mind. Wouldn’t that be sufficient?
