Randomly found myself at one of her shows circa 2011/2012 and was really impressed with how well she was able to pull the wool over everyone’s eyes. She’s just dull, evidently quite dim, and a kewpie edgelord persona ain’t ever gonna change that. I hate how much Janelle Monáe collaborates with her, it makes me

Yes. There was more exploration, intelligent conversation, and moral philosophizing in the last two weeks than basically any Trek since the rare good episode of Voyager (or Enterprise’s final year if you want to be kind). First Handlen said Discovery was too unlike TNG. Now it’s too similar to old Trek. Which is it?

Tonight’s episode was great. I haven’t felt this giddy about Star Trek since I was 12 and Voyager was still a thing. I guess Discovery isn’t for everyone.

...I’m really struggling with Tilly...

Another for the “bizarrely angry Discovery review” pile. This one is better at seeming like it’s not a “waaaaah this doesn’t make me feel like TNG made me feel when I was 9" screed than the ones on Reddit, but that’s all this is.

With respect, seriously, you need to go back over this piece and make some corrections.

It sounds like Average Anna has a pretty good time until she gets married and has kids.  That was obviously her mistake.

“...that she hadn’t saved up enough money to rent an apartment...”

I remember when Candace Owens broke. She was pushing an app that would dox online bullies, and it was freaking GamerGaters out. Then the most famous victims of GamerGate told her that app was a bad idea and it broke her. The people who were initially terrified of the possibility of that app saw their moment and love bo

Britney Spears has had a relevant career for three decades?

I feel like this movie would have been ten thousand times better if it was written by that Britney Spears fan who was struggling with how complicit they were in the destruction of that girl and accepting that things play out as they play out.

Rich, I typically enjoy your cultural criticism (for example, your piece about George Michael was really strong and inspired me to re-examine his work), but I must disagree with your assessment that Bohemian Rhapsody was critically underrated. If anything, it was critically overrated. I found its heavy-handed

Why do so many of Rich’s reviews seem to boil down to “In this essay, I’m going to use incredibly affected language to tell you why I dislike this famous female singer/actor.”?

And then there is Celeste’s staggeringly mediocre performance. In what leads up to the climax, Celeste is made out to be a legend on the scale of Britney Spears...”

Critically Underrated Bohemian Rhapsody”? Did I read that correctly? Is this a typo? One of the most wildly sugary, silly, offensive mainstream releases of 2018? A film with zero meaningful or original or even accurate commentary on the nature of pop music or fame or homosexuality in the 80's? What about this movie

I watched the trailer; my response, “wow am I totally happy that watching a trailer isn’t the equivalent of signing a contract to watch a movie.”

I think it’s a good example of why I’m not into pop music. Natalie Portman isn’t a singer or a dancer, so they cast her. Most pop musicians (there are exceptions of course) aren’t good singers or songwriters, they’re faces (and maybe good dancers). It’s all a layered and easily consumed product, like junk food for

so Phil Coulson fans might want to prepare themselves for yet another ostensibly motivating character death when Agents Of A.C.R.O.N.Y.M.
