Reminds me of Eisenhowers concerns following the assaisination of JFK. There was a lot of confusion and distress (understandably) before LBJ was sworn in as President. Eisenhower contended that LBJ was President the moment Kennedy died, that it was part of the oath he took as VP. This was no academic concern. If the

I thought Durin was called deathless because all his heirs were named Durin?

But everyone would have failed isn't that the point? No one could have thrown the ring in. This seems to me where Tolkien Christianity comes in. All have (or would) fall short. It required a higher power, working at an unseen and unknowable level, to end the evil.

I'm not sure it would characterize it that way. It always seemed bittersweet to me.

It makes me feel like even if there is a happy ending so to speak it won't be plausible

He had problematic and retrograde views that is for sure. Its important to remember that he was born in the 19th century, and elected to Parliament while Victoria reigned. He also gets an eternity pass because if it had not been for him in 1940, then the Nazis probably win the war.

Into the Storm was a fine Churchill movie as well.

A multi generational movie about Pitt the Elder and younger would set my nerdy BBC production heart aflutter.

This is an aspect of A Song of Ice and Fire that I find interesting, and hasn't been as discussed that much (If someone has seen something along these lines and can point me to it I would obliged.)
One of the themes of Tolkien's work, and indeed much of fantasy, is the idea of the fading of magic. But in ASOIF it seems

I never watched Lost, but much of the commentary about it reminds me of how they wrapped up the "Starbuck isn't dead" plot in Battlestar Galactica.
"She was a ghost! Or angel! Or something!"

Can I share a general concern I have for the Game of Thrones show/books? So winter has finally arrived? And it will last years? And bascially every land (Especially the North, Riverlands, Lannister country and the area around Kings Landing) has been ravaged by war? How exactly is anyone supposed to survive years of

Man. As the father of a daughter that scene still kills me.

No, I completely get it. The filmaker is obviously wanting you to root for the apes, to see those connections, which on the face of it are pretty offensive. But the ferocity of it is still jarring in my opinion.

Love Conquest. Its very unsettling to me. The tension of the defenses of the revolting city being methodically broken down…I remember some documentary on the films saying that some audiences were openly cheering for the Apes at the end of that one.

Was I the only one who thought being locked in cage with Linda Harrison wouldnt be that bad?

I think that's part of the humor.

I think it's unfair to blame Trey and Matt for people taking serious political opinions from what is in essence a cartoon show about foul mouthed boys. Do any serious people take South Park or cartman as their guiding ideological light? I don't like blaming artists for the failings of individuals. Frankly pop culture

I'm not sure that's fair. The republicans had a rough primary with many candidates and there was much division in the conservative intelligentsia over Trump.

If you ever get a chance to have Gus Fried Chicken, which originated in the Memphis TN area but has spread out some i think, do so. It's darn good.

Did that as a small boy back in 1980. Good memories. Took my own kid to Disney a couple of years ago. It was mostly unrecognizbale but I enjoyed the few things that jogged my memory.
