I found that if the queue is too long you will simply get an error screen saying the server is full. If your line in the queue is reasonable a waiting window will pop up with your number in the line and will automatically log you in when the time comes

It's still there but unreliable. It seems there is a cap to the queue, above which you get errors. And you can still be dropped once you're queueing.

I'm not sure myself. I assumed they removed it in an attempt to lighten the load on the servers. Though it could have been an unintended side effect of congestion.
