I agree with this. The article says that it's especially important for Black children to be taught pride in their heritage...I actually think it might be more important for White children. Because White children are the ones who grow up thinking that everyone else is "ethnic" and they are just "normal".

Solitary confinement absolutely can be a form of torture, but don't kid yourself that it's cheaper to kill them than keep them. Death penalty cases cost far more money than inmates sentenced to life.

"if true" being the most relevant part of that statement. How fair do you imagine the trial she had was, given she' a foreign female in Saudi Arabia from a pariah state with zero power to extricate one of their nationals from a situation like this. Is there a chance she was a scapegoat?

Details matter. You can't just say things are the same when logically, they aren't.

From The Independent

It took them three hits with the sword, and she was given nothing to dull the pain, such as painkillers. But that sounds really humane! Fuck western racism!!!

I'd heard anecdotally previously and just checked Wikipedia to see if it mentioned it, and apparently Eve has now written a monologue for a trans woman to be included in the Monologues. She "updates" the monologues from time to time I believe.

As a trans woman invested in owning a vagina, literally (monetarily) and figuratively (emotionally), and physically (yeah that one is obvious), I find this silly. If there are issues with the play, then add some monologues about SRS vaginas. I think that would be awesome.

I agree - it's anecdata to say the least. All I meant by it is that I haven't seen any ill effects in my cats, and that I don't think banning declawing is the right way to go about stopping it. I'd honestly advocate for more vets to do it only if they're positive that the owners are making informed decisions and to

Yeah, you're probably going to get a ton of flack, but what you said is a lot of people's experiences with declawing cats. Our cats when I was growing up were declawed, and it was a total non-event. My friend in college got a cat and got it declawed, and the vet absolutely butchered the things paws...visible sutures,

I had my Black Cat declawed (front feet only) as soon as I adopted her, because the cat I grew up with (who lived to be 19) had been declawed and it was just what I was used to. She healed quickly and never seemed to have any issues, but I started to feel guilty after I read about all of the anti-declawing activists

I'd like to be perfectly clear: I did not put any cats through this. I have a cat who still has his claws that we have to buff out every week so that he doesn't ruin all of our furniture or accidentally rip them out getting them snagged on things. It wasn't ever my decision to declaw cats. All I'm saying is my

That looks like Park Slope. Brooklyn Heights doesn't have much in the way of houses that are fronted by actual traditional brownstone - they're brick. I think Debi Mazur is in Park Slope too, so maybe she recommended it.

Thank you. And your username is cracking me up.

Not everyone listens to Serial or has given this case much attention. I haven't. All I know is this dude's in jail for killing his girlfriend, and some people have doubts. That's a pretty good description of.. pretty much everyone who is in jail for killing their girlfriend.

Sorry, the blogger bit wasn't a dig — honestly — it's just where most of the conversation I've seen on this have gotten their talking points. And I'm disgusted by some of the troll responses you've gotten — not helpful to any kind of fruitful conversation, for sure. I don't know the monkey banana cover, but I will

Europeans trying to extend their way of life to countries with large numbers of Arabs and Muslims back in the day got much of this mess started.

I don't think those cartoons are racist and the ideology of the left that's been asserting that anything that mocks Islam and Islamic extremism is racist is extremely problematic. This isn't a sign-off on all the Charlie Hebdo cartoons, by the way, since apparently, according to some people, I must be Rush Limbaugh if

This is the beauty of truly open societies; we can debate these points ( and I kind of agree with both of you) without feeling obligated to murder each other over it. Viva secularism.
