Is there a latin neighborhood or grocer anywhere near you? If so, check there for malt soda. Malta Goya, Malta India, Pony Malta, etc - any/all should be relatively easy to find at a shop that might stock say, cotija or pickled chicharrones.

My wife does this, and has done so since she was a kid. It is good but I find it’s not quite good enough to justify washing the pan (unless she offers, in which case done deal). It’s definitely a better texture.
