It's really respectable imo when devs do this. Rimworld has been a recent shining example of incorporating beloved mods into the base game.
It’s toggleable and different add-ons can produce similar results.

The map markers were a great help but it still forced you to stare at the mini-map. At least with the Mankirk’s wife era you would read the quest then look around the actual game world. Retail before pre-patch was almost StarCraft levels of constant checking the mini-map.
