That news would come as a surprise to veterans of the Buffalo Soldiers (the 92nd ID) or the 761st Tank Battalion, units which boasted three CMOH recipients among them. The Army was segregated, true, but a few of those segregated units saw combat.

They were Depression kids. Most of them grew up poor, under tough conditions, and were forced to take on much more reponsibility at a younger age than we would imagine today. Many of them had to quit school in the '30s at a young age to work to help support their families. Their background toughened them.
