Trig, I know they say that there's no accounting for taste, but in this case it doesn't apply. The inadequacy of your taste in literature is an objective fact.

Behold the Man.

I first got into Ballard as a 12-year old reading Hello America. I read it as a perfectly straightforward future adventure story. Then I got The Drowned World, then virtually everything else he wrote (I even sprang for the UK import-only Complete Short Stories-the posthumous version includes two other stories-dammit).

Kim Gordon + Kate Winslet in bed? My college self's head just exploded (well, both of them).

It's sort of the same reason Republicans keep getting elected. It's not that Bay is bad and his movies are abortions, it's that the public is comprised of sub-literate homunculi who neither desire nor deserve better.

I'll say it right here. Michael Bay is the artistic counterpart of George Bush.

Raiders fandom has nothing to do with football and everything to do with being a juvenile delinquent or former J.D. from west of the Rockies.

Not necessarily ALL women, just all attractive women. There is no more essentially fascist creature than a 22-year-old looker.

Stav - the irony is that BTM is less gay than the Latin original "Ecce Homo." (the phrase originates as Pilate's mockery of Christ before the crowd just before he was crucified).

They could use Book of Love's "I Touch Roses" for the theme song…

Norman Spinrad's dead? BTW for more Christ-based alt-history check out Michael Moorcock's Behold the Man.

Actually Ballard, even his novels from a few years ago, always had that otherworldly writing style - NO ONE ever wrote like that.

I've basically decided that any movie called "Crash" that doesn't prominently feature Deborah Kara Unger nude isn't worth taking notice of. I stand by my decision.

I heard it as "Tech Support" vs. "Casino"
