Indeed, they are insane, to think the characters move in 16 directions and they didn't just made half and flipped the other half. And there are a ton of different animation, some of which provably only show up once through the game.

I think it's perfectly fine not to like or want a game, you don't have to force yourself to want this game if you really don't want it.

It's a .png with transparency, you can put whatever background color you like on it.

And they are going to use it. But there is still a grid, which is there because it's easier for them to trigger events that way.

So now that they finally added 8 direction movement is when you choose to boycott them? Shouldn't it have been the other way around?(if that is such a big deal for you)

There control scheme is different, yes, so a lot of things will be different. There will be new mechanics, skills will have to be adjusted, etc.

Diablo isn't out for the PS3 yet, but you can play the demo on PC.
