Also, sorry Ian, that comment was meant to be made to the comment section as a whole, not you. The article itself was great! :)

I find the backlash against lack of pausing so odd.
I mean, I get why people want to be able to pause mid-action, obviously, but literally almost every other game ever made services that desire. Yet here a small sub-group of gamers like the tension of not being able to interrupt the action and find it to be a…
Brutal Doom does work with FreeDoom, so if you’d rather not rebuy a modern re-release of Doom via GOG or such then you could go that route.
It’s pretty straightforward, just install FreeDoom and then apply Brutal Doom to it like you would to Doom 1 or 2. It’s not terribly complicated, and almost any rig could run it…
Given how many people (myself included) still willfully play early era Doom releases and enjoy them, I think it’s fair to say this doesn’t fall into the category you describe.
The dated graphics successfully hold a charm and the relatively simple level designs feel just fine alongside it’s relatively simple gameplay.
T…
It’s really disheartening as a life-long Blizzard fan.
I mean, I’ve gone to 3 Blizzcons now (including as far back as 2010) and have their merch adorning my home in every corner.
My spouse and I still play Diablo 3 to this day when we’re off-work.
So, seeing this behavior from Blizzard is a massive disappointment.
Blizzard trying to mindfuck their way through doing so little to this IP,
after advertising the complete opposite,
is tremendous.
They pushed out a barebones product that was different than they claimed... Just own it at this point, if you’re gonna lean into it.
Don’t spin in around in this response like you’re…
That sky blue/seafoam green color combo looks so clean, and is a pairing I’d probably have never considered matching on my own if customizing the color combination myself.
The pattern on the back of the Switch is growing on me more the longer I look at it, too.
At the same MSRP as the standard Switch designs, this is…
I was wondering the same thing. I thought this myth had be debunked a long time ago.
AFAIK the thought stemmed from the way charging those batteries works (they’re given a trickle charge while at full to keep them at full) along with their limited number of charge/recharge cycles. It was thought that the way chargers…
“It also suggests that moms would not be interested in this—which isn’t true— but dads have become a culturally acceptable target for gentle mockery and loving parody, and while I am not a dad, I am personally fine with that.”
There is so much wrong with this statement.
I must be in the minority ‘cus I’m seeing these complaints all over the place but it hasn’t bothered me one bit.
The occasional framerate slowdowns don’t really matter much because this isn’t an action game in any sense, and the lack of graphical fidelity in places is pretty dismissable since the art style is cohesive…
Indeed.
It’s nice to look at here, but WoW’s charm comes from their art team being able to convey such a unique cartoony style via fairly simple graphics. Ever since Warcraft 3, their thing has kind of been that with low system requirements.
Doesn’t feel right anymore done all “realistic”.
I’m in a similar camp.
I wouldn’t say it’s so jarring that it makes me not want to play at all, but it’s significant enough that I regret purchasing it for this console over the PS4 or Xbone.
Having the game portable was so exciting to me as an option, and the Switch seemed like the obvious version to get. However,…
This interests me as well, too.
While I don’t have particularly shaky hands or anything, I wouldn’t say I’ve ever had exceptionally steady hands either, and more weighty mouses have often felt preferable to me as they act as a bit of a stabilizer for minor imperfections in twitches or shakes that may occur in the heat…
Just got the patch tonight myself (after my initial play sesh), though I haven’t had the time to give it another go yet.
I’m not certain that the game will see much improvement from it ‘cus the “jank” I mentioned wasn’t the typical stuff you’d expect from a game needing more polish (it was more so a general stiffness…
Just a couple hours in and so far there’s a bit of jankiness in the non-combat related facets, such as cutscenes and whatnot, and you can tell the director didn’t have the full resources of Konami behind him this time ‘round,
but overall it’s exactly all the same beats and gameplay loop that made titles like Symphony…
The way they’ve injected more platforming elements into this game, with the pole swings and wall climbs, is so perfect.
ID yet again is just leaning right into what Doom is: A game.
Nothing else. No nonsense. Just action and design at a break-neck speed.
So ready for this.
I’m gonna take the “look at me, I’m different”-route here and say I’m actually pretty okay with this.
Commander Keen is a long dead franchise, and while people like myself are actually old enough to appreciate what it was, it’s not like any of us were clamoring to get more of it.
If they were gonna take any ID…
Yet another excellent piece from Mike.
Was a fascinating read. Thanks for sharing.
Used to play this game *so much* when I was younger. Absolutely loved it.
Hadn’t touched it (or even thought of it, for that matter) in so long that I had to go bust out my stored away N64 to double check if I owned the game or not. Spoiler: I don’t. Guess I must’ve just rented it a bunch of the times that the…
Wow, that Big Snowman track just took me back. lol
