I guess I misspoke, I was thinking IS might let you use a faster shutter speed than you otherwise might need to, but it doesn't work that way. IS lets you use a slower shutter speed and still shoot handheld, which as you note just isn't much of a factor here.

When is IS really going to help with this lens, though? Maybe if you're trying to freeze a bit of action, but how often are you doing that with a fairly wide lens? Meanwhile a decent photog should be able to take fairly clear pictures with this lens at 1/50, and once you get down into the 1/10 range IS isn't going
