For iOS/Mac users, FaceTime Audio is an excellent service. It is integrated right into the phone app on the iPhone so you can make a call immediately, and provides really clear audio compared to the competition. Alternatively, you can go to Settings>>Wi-Fi and turn Ask to Join Networks to off. This way your phone will hop on Wi-Fi networks it knows, but won't look around for more without direct orders.
