I gave the wrong impression of how I envision Freddy's role in the show. I don't see him making a play for Eliza or scheming to break up her and Henry in every single episode. Maybe he would initially try to get Eliza back after they break up and she gets together with Henry, but then he would try dating other women

Yes, there has been plenty of character growth in Eliza, especially in the last 3 episodes. I believe Emily Kapnek said that the characters needed to grow before you could root for Henry and Eliza to be together, so I think that's why we saw what happened plotwise before having them become a couple. For me though,

Yeah, I don't envision the writers telling/featuring any story about personal growth in the Freddy character. However, they could've had him fade away from the show after Eliza dumped him in episode 9, or even just have kept he and Eliza in a physical-only relationship, as he offered her in episode 10, but they had

Good point. Freddy was wrapped around Eliza in sleep during the voiceover, yet Eliza was dreaming of work and not thinking about Freddy at all. However, if Eliza got together with Henry in the future and ran into other problems with him, Freddy would always be a fallback option to ease the hurt. I don't think being

It's nice hearing from you guys again. Yes, I agree with everything said about the personal growth, lack of closure, and not getting to see Eliza and Henry together. They are hilarious and charming separately and as a couple. I don't think Freddy would have ever completely gone away as a threat to a Henry/Eliza

That's a good point about Henry being an indirect threat. I can also see where Saperstein was trying to bring Henry and Eliza together in some of the past episodes, but if that was meant to be the intent in "Stick in the Mud", it failed miserably. ;) Saperstein was prodding Henry to do something about his love life

Just wanted to say that I admire how you can continue finding new insights into the episodes, especially after 8-9 months.
I'm not sure that the too soon/too long decision played that much of a role in the cancellation. I was willing to wait for the major events to occur as long as the show remained funny. For whatever

No problem, I obviously have similar problems with late responses. :-O I hope you're doing better now.

Yes, Henry's mother probably would've been introduced on the show sooner or later. Poor John Cho - his character's background and life issues likely would've come to the fore in the second half (post-episode 13) of the season had the show been given a full first season, but he never got that spotlight.
I don't think

"As I wrote earlier, Eliza's feelings may be on a subconscious level to some degree and it doesn't all come to her at once. At the end of episode 11, she may be questioning the wisdom of pushing Henry as she did. It is only by the end of episode 12 that she may be feeling that making Henry jealous would push him into

"I trace Eliza's feelings back to the end of episode 11 when Freddy tells her that every time he tries to get closer to her, she pushes him away. She may think the same thing about her direct declaration having that effect on Henry." Yes, I remember people discussing that theory in the comments of the episode 11

That's an interesting take on episode 12. I thought the "little competition is a good thing" line was just referring to Eliza and her sister's past, and Henry and Freddy's attempt to win the race. Your take is definitely plausible, although it would really alter the dynamic of the show. Eliza's been portrayed as an

I apologize for being unclear. I just explained what I meant in another post. Anyways, I totally agree with your thought on the John Cho casting. They probably could've gotten somebody else to do a good job, but I don't know if it would've drawn me in like this casting has.
BTW, I really enjoyed your fan fiction

Sorry about the delay and the confusion. The article I was talking about is this: An In-Depth Cultural Analysis of Asian Male TV Characters Getting Some Action (http://www.vulture.com/2014…. I was theorizing that because of this public discussion, the writers were going to build up to an especially torrid love scene

I didn't realize you were still open to discussing the show. I would've replied earlier, but it sounded like you were in a recovery stage, and I didn't want to poke at an open wound…

Yeah, totally agree. There's so much story left to tell. I don't understand how The Mindy Project got offers from multiple networks/streaming services before landing at Hulu after Fox's cancellation, but Selfie didn't land anywhere despite its slightly higher ratings. I actually blame Warner Brothers for not shopping

Fresh Off the Boat should be more up my alley, as a US-born Chinese person who prefers family comedies, but it's been a difficult watch, as the parents aren't very realistic to me, and I'm not interested in hip-hop. I've gotten sucked into soap operas in the past, but labeling a show as a romantic comedy would

But WKRP and Dawson's Creek were both more or less before the TV-on-DVD era, so I'd be surprised if in 2014, the song rights issues weren't taken care of beforehand. Although, the Eliza booty dance clip from episode 5 was redubbed with different music on ABC.com and Hulu.com. Or maybe Blues Traveler is pissed about

CW is my preferred outlet as well. I haven't subscribed to cable/satellite for years, so from a purely selfish POV I'd like to avoid paying for those channels again (although I would for Selfie's return) if it went to, say, TBS or USA. Plus CW seems to have more patience with their programs than the big 4 networks. A

Yeah, apparently there is also an unreleased "Old McDonald" episode (with John Cho singing again) as well!
