The one with Trachtenberg is especially weird, since Dawn was originally intended to be a preteen but then Joss was supposedly so bowled over by her audition that suddenly no other actress would do (but it apparently slipped his mind to alter the season’s first few scripts, resulting in Dawn being so incongruously…
Been waiting for awhile for Marti Noxon to go on the record. My bet is she’s this source.
It’s interesting to me how far the studios would go to work around a leading man’s height, but 15 pounds for an actress could be seen as a crisis needing amphetamines. Although I suppose it’s worth adding that studios would push drugs on male actors for various dumb reasons too.
While I agree her weight is the least interesting part of Garland’s performance, it is an extremely relevant aspect of Garland’s life story. Not that her actual weight is relevant to what comes next for her: The year before Garland had been hospitalized seemingly to kick all of the pills and medication that had been…
I was thinking more like his college drama class presented this as a stage play, not that he was in the film w/Gene Kelly and Judy Garland. But what you said makes more sense.
I think he meant summer stock in general -
JFC there is nothing hotter than Gene Kelly dancing with his eyes closed and a half smile.
Thank you for this loving tribute to Judy and Gene. I love this movie. I love them. I’m feeling a musical fest coming on this weekend.
Oh, gosh, I only have to see Betty Hutton (much less hear that klaxon of a voice) to go running into the other room with my hands over my ears.
Whoever told that woman she could sing?
I’m fond of this movie too, extreme corn and all Glad to see it incisively written up here.
I just watched Singin’ in the Rain for the first time after a couple of decades and Kelly defines light on his feet. Truly looks effortless, it’s amazing.
I love this movie. One of my go-to cheering myself up movies along with Easter Parade and Singin in the Rain. Kelly's newspaper dance is inexplicably sexy. Garland does that lovably flustered thing as well as she ever did.
I have no doubt that Judy would’ve been wonderful in Annie Get Your Gun. Certainly better than Betty Hutton. If the stuff with the Native Americans doesn’t make you cringe (and it’s pretty bad), Hutton’s mugging will.
Looking at that that shot of "Get Happy" makes me wonder if she had an influence on Bob Fosse too? Great article - made my morning ♡
I’ve never seen this but I’m sure I’ve heard the music — “Get Happy,” certainly.
Was just watching the Gene Kelly solo dance scene the other day.
Silly premise? Sure, but it’s one of the great Arthur Freed MGM Musicals....
Summer Stock is probably my favorite Judy movie - it’s corny, yes, but it taps into her melancholy without leaning into maudlin (as much of her later work sometimes veers in), and her chemistry with Gene Kelly is among the most potent of any screen pairing. On paper, it would be tempting to want Garland to just try…
Lovely article. I still haven’t seen this one but in “For me and my gal” both were incredibly above the material, dancing, smiling and singing their asses off.
