Jamie Dantzscher wrote an incredibly powerful foreword to a book on gymnastics where she writes about realising as an adult that somebody she thought was kind (Nassar) actually abused her:

It’s a highly skilled and highly beautiful sport to watch. It doesn’t have to be done by children though. A lot of the women’s teams have gymnasts in their 20s and 30s and Oxana Chusovitina is now 42 and continues to make Worlds.

As a Brit, Nassar has done a lot of terrible stuff to people but he hasn’t taken down either gymnastics or US gymnastics. USAG may be a shaky horrible institution but come next month, the US women’s team will go to Worlds and Simone will win AA Gold and the US women will win Team Gold.

“Point, my daughter, when she was 12, did one elite qualifier. She did well and her score would have been better than like 40 percent of all scores at Worlds and her beam score would have been like top third comparatively. However, in the US, this score didn’t even rank as decent.”

There will have been a couple of people who knew and didn’t want to bring on the shitstorm or at least who suspected and turned a blind eye.

I definitely agree rape needs to be distinguished from sexual harrassment and what we would call public indecency here. It would be easier to talk about a way back for some of these men if they had served their time rather than laid low enjoying their money (that’s not rehabilitation).

I’m going by my area for this, mind (Yorkshire). Ironically I would be the situation would be easier in London (lots of educational organisations).
