It’s saying you can’t claim to hire on merit when part of your definition of merit is being like the bosses because people can’t control their gender/ethnicity etc.

It is also power abuse and in-group/out-group dynamics.
I sort of agree but also the whole “start your own company then”response doesn’t really address the reality of doing so. You need:
Sigh. If we don’t call out sexism and racism how is the US going to get better at avoiding it?
Calling out criminal behaviour isn’t being a victim.
Did you read the article? The problem is lots of serious gamers are women and they do apply and they get screened out by men who think you need a dick to be a serious gamer......
I was actually wondering if sociopathy could be curable the other day because I think it could. I think it is a response born out of constant fear and constant fear of attack. So you go into a mode where every resource you have goes into maintaining your position you’ve got to.
Anecdotally, I was equally good at Maths and Eng Lit but got recommended to stick with humanities. Since I wanted to be a writer and did, I followed the advice and dropped Maths instead of taking it to A Level (I’m English by the way).
I love how so many on this thread doubt the existence of misogyny at Riot while spewing it themselves ;-)
The problem with meritocracy is that it doesn’t exist. Unconscious bias and all that. The stories above suggested Riot hirers saw merit in having a dick and a lack of merit in having a vagina.
It makes me want to start a mysterious games company with a game that appeals to dudebros and then break them all by revealing a year later that a team of all women and only women made it ;-)
The problem is that they see gender as an accomplishment and tune out the accomplishments of [half the people on this planet]. And they don’t have the self-awareness to see it.
Yeah the older I get the more I see there’s no such thing.
Great point. My company is sexist but also we have one worker out of 50 that isn’t white.
Ask her as an open question: “what’s your perception about the culture of the company?”
Good luck.
“You dont understand people if you think men and women are equal.”
And if you do everything to make it a hostile environment for half the world’s population it will stay that way. This is why representation is important. It’s easier to lie and deflect and defend than hire women and then do the work of improving your corporate culture.
Love this advice, great post.
My god, a constructive suggestion from someone who isn’t denying the presence of a problem ;-)
