Like, Oscars for individual stunt performers? Not, like, choreography directors or whatever? Isn’t it difficult to know which stunt performer did which stunts? I assumed there was a whole bunch of em. (I have no idea how it works)

It’s from a Wall Street Journal story “From Which River to Which Sea?” (paywalled, but there are summaries). Most respondents didn’t realize the slogan wasn’t originally intended to refer to a two-state solution or a peaceful one-state solution, but to the destruction and replacement of Israel and its Jewish residents

Oh yeah don’t get me wrong, it was offensive either way—don’t mean to imply he said nothing wrong.

I assume they’re referring to the popular “from the river to the sea” slogan—most Westerners who say it have no idea what it means, of course (one survey showed that a large majority of pro-Palestine college students reverse their position on the slogan once they’re actually shown said river and sea on a map). But I

Well to be fair I doubt everybody else here personally listened to the clips before broadcasting their takes either. But yeah I could be wrong about the slurs, don’t quote me on that. It’s just the impression I got from reading summaries.

I don’t really care if someone said f*ggot on some rando podcast six years ago, unless they’re an openly hateful religious nut or whatever. (I’m gay don’t yell at me.) Sounds like his use of Chinese slurs was similar to the #CancelColbert brouhaha in that it sounds wayyy worse out of context than it actually was,

I mean, if I have magic contact lenses and earbuds that can automatically translate a conversation both ways, with perfect accuracy, I’m sure as hell not gonna bother taking years to learn ASL.

[Sam Barsanti takes over the recaps, docks a full letter grade from every episode for the remainder of the season]

Yeah, and the fact that they’re not holding him liable as producer makes it even weirder, because I sincerely doubt that prosecutors would be this aggressive if Alec Baldwin’s stunt double were the one who pulled the trigger. (I’m also certain that social media users—and AVC writers—would be way more sympathetic if it

Spoiler alert, a decade and a half later—it was not.

Damn, good call. https://www.avclub.com/carrie-coon-books-a-stay-at-the-white-lotus-season-3-1851154393

Yeah, this is the one subgenre of film I can never bring myself to watch.

99% of moviegoers are completely unaware of any of that lol.

Yeah, I can buy a little exaggeration in a satire, but like... post-2014 culture writers are some of the most race-conscious, left-wing people out there. And that very much includes white critics. (Case in point, critics are near-universally praising this movie about how critics embrace racist stereotypes—a far cry

Does this movie take place in the late ‘90s / early 2000s, like the source material does? Because the idea that multiple books filled with racist stereotypes would receive universal acclaim in 2023, from today’s culture writers, is completely absurd. But I think I saw an iPhone in the trailer.

I actually only knew him as the “skeptical asshole who dies early as a result of his hubris” guy in (spoilers for meh movies from 2006–07) Poseidon, The Mist, and Fantastic Four (what a typecast!). But he was solid in all three.

In what alternate universe would California and Texas ever be teaming up?

Ismay is treated even worse in the (quite bad) Titanic Broadway musical, where he’s basically the main antagonist. In more than one scene, he demands the captain speed up the ship while sinister music plays in the background. (Murdoch is portrayed heroically though, IIRC.)

“Morally bankrupt” lol ffs. You guys clutch your pearls harder than the conservatives who bemoan violence in video games.

Yeah, if this is the online crowd’s idea of “dystopian”, then their standards for “dystopia” are too low. (Course, we knew that already.) It’s a dumb game show they slapped the name of a popular series onto. Nobody would have a problem with this show if it were called anything other than “Squid Game”.
