Appreciate the legal background on this. I’m really starting to get interested in the legal and administrative practices of the NBA, CBA, etc. which is not something I expected when I clicked on this article! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
If he died I don’t think they’d have much of a suit if his family sued the NBA, but doesn’t mean they couldn’t try. But fans suing for emotional distress? Did they do that when Zeke Upshaw died on the court?
Yes they can, doesn’t mean I have to agree with their choice though (even if I understand it). If they let him play or not (and whether he died while playing or not) it ultimately would have a minuscule financial impact for a multi-billion dollar league. On the flip side this guy is being locked out of potentially…
Seriously. I mean he should’ve been fired just for driving an Audi alone.
This reminds me of the Gators coaching search when Steve Spurrier left. The internet was just coming into widespread use so people were reporting when the Gators Jet was landing at various stops and people were shitting their pants with anticipation about where they would go next and who they were talking to. Glad…
That’s crazy. I guess it’s nice the President stood up to the board somewhat, but just, wow. Would’ve been nice if the President really fell on his sword and took the board’s advice, then held a press conference and fired Urban Meyer and dared the board to fire him too.
Thanks, I didn’t know that teams had the option of taking out insurance on player contracts. That’s interesting on a number of levels, but that’s another discussion. I can see PR being bad (although given his situation I don’t think it would be as bad as you might think) but from a strictl liability standpoint I…
I really do wonder if his 38 million dollar buyout factored into the decision. From a purely monetary standpoint they saved about 40 million by suspending rather than firing him. Although they could have tried to fire him for cause it probably would’ve been difficult and extremely messy. Bottom line is, buyouts…
Thanks man, I like your approach! Now I just need to pick out my team. Too bad Billericay Town FC isn’t in a higher league or I’d be all over them.
Yeah, I get it. From a PR standpoint it makes perfect sense for the NBA to not let him play. They get to show that health is more important than the game to them and the whole thing about them offering him a job was nice too. I think my problem is that it’s not like there are that many people capable of playing in…
Ouch, Sounds like a class act! Also, thanks for helping me out. I’m trying to get more up to speed on my soccer knowledge but it’s a steep learning curve.
I’m just going to come right out and say it: this joke is totally eluding me. I’m guessing it has something to do with soccer?
What is the liability the NBA would assume for letting him play? He’s a grown man making an informed decision based on a medical risk to himself. What does it mean for his contract to be uninsurable?
Soul Man was a hell of a movie though. It’s also a key reason for the reverse discrimination lawsuits being filed by the DOJ since Trump saw it 30 years ago and thought it was a documentary.
It doesn’t sound like they are denying him specifically but anyone with that condition. I agree that he should be allowed to play though, it’s ridiculous that a grown man can’t decide his own fate and make his own choices.
It seems pretty unreasonable for the NBA to make a determination like this. I can understand being concerned about the kids well being, and advising him of the risks is important, but ultimately if he wants to play and he is willing to risk it, then he should be allowed to do so.
I like how he says, “I can only imagine how difficult this entire situation is on you.” Like I give a fuck about some millionaire’s self inflicted stupidity. This guy is seriously comic gold.
Just like Papa John himself says, “We will all get through this together, somehow, some way.”
I’m sure Kawhi will play the rest of his career in Toronto now.
