I think you pretty much nailed it, I still own an E46 330ci, and going to an E46 m3 makes no sense. This is on my radar, big time!

And this is why I still choose to buy slightly older (just picked up the E46 above), but fun vehicles! What really gets me is how much harder it was finding a manual transmission... At least let me keep the option to shut down the safety options and keep the manual, I can deal with bland via a rich aftermarket.
