put the batteries in the floor of the trailer. sure it'll reduce the weight the trailer can haul but it just provides more incentive to create lighter batteries.
the subaru 6-speed should be able to handle that pretty reliably. its only the 5-speed that isnt very good.

I am an engineer as well and make a decent salary however the part of the country in which you live has a HUGE impact on how much of said salary is taken home and how much is paid in taxes and housing.
