Because the whole encounter was about Salim becoming Jinn - the fact that it was a one time encounter was meaningful in and of itself.  Just like Shadow and Audrey would not reconcile - that’s meaningful and intentional.  These seem like maybe small items but they are not.

What is up with the author and people here treating Fuller like he’s the source?!  He’s not and he didn’t respect the source much.
